Sailing Program

TIPYC’s active and successful Youth Sailing Program is the hallmark of the club. No membership needed. All children can take advantage of the sailing program. Advance registration is required for each weekly session.

Registration for the Summer 2024 program is now open.  The sailing program will start on Monday, July 1 and continue for six weeks, through Thursday, August 8.

  • The Learn to Sail program features US Sailing Certified Instructors.
  • This year we plan on six weeks of sessions. Advance registration is required for each weekly session.
  • The first session starts on or about the first week of July, with classes generally running Mondays through Thursdays.
  • Students will be divided into groups based on age, ability and experience. Beginners are welcome and encouraged to participate!
  • All Classes meet at the South Bay Sailing Platform Rain or Shine (alternate activities related to Sailing will be provided if necessary).

This year we plan to have two daily sessions:

  • Children (Ages 8-12): 9:30 to Noon. A mandatory swim test for new students begins at 9:00 on Mondays.
  • Youth (Ages 12-18): 1:00 to 3:30. A swim test may be required. Participation by 12-year-olds should be based on size, experience, and maturity level.
  • Participants do not have to have a sailboat or even be planning to own one.
  • Life jackets and boat shoes are required
  • A hat, sunscreen, towel, water, and snack are recommended.
  • Participants must abide by the TIPYC Code of Conduct.
  • TIPYC maintains a small fleet of sailboats including Sunfish, Optimists, Lasers (4.7 and Radials), 420s, a Lightning, and a Javelin O’day.
  • These boats are available to students in the Sailing Program and participants for Community Sailing.
  • Every summer, TIPYC organizes a youth races for sailors of Optimists, Lasers, and 420s.
  • Students, regardless of age, with the ability to sail solo are eligible to participate on the Traveling Race Team.
  • The Club’s Racing Team is affiliated with the Central New York Inter-Club Circuit.
  • Anyone with sailing experience can reserve a Sunfish or Laser to sail at their leisure.
  • Boats will be rigged and ready to go.
  • Following required registration, we will provide safety boats and counselors to assist sailors as necessary.
  • Tipping staff is highly recommended.
